Around 5 a.m. on July 14, Chen Hongjiu, He Shikun, and other employees of the Guiyang Xianfeng Gold Processing Branch Factory, who were fast asleep, received a call from their factory supervisors demanding that they immediately report to work. Awakened by the phone call, Chen Hongjiu, He Shikun, and the others didn't hesitate for a moment; without complaint, they quickly washed up, tidied themselves, and rushed to the workplace to get right to work. By 6 a.m., Chen Hongjiu had already traveled from Huaxi—more than 20 kilometers away from the company—to the job site to repair Baosteel’s rollers. Meanwhile, the boring operators, crane operators from the gold processing branch factory, and other staff members including He Shikun, gradually arrived at the scene as well.
