Stepping into the final assembly workshop of Guiyang Xianfeng Machine Tool Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Guiyang Xianfeng"), one is immediately greeted by a scene of bustling activity. All production lines in the workshop are operating at full capacity, and under the bright lights, the sounds of machinery rise and fall continuously. Workers wear their personal protective equipment properly and skillfully operate the machines. Each worker looks energetic and full of enthusiasm, truly inspiring admiration.

In the bustling workshop of the final assembly plant, There’s a figure that’s particularly eye-catching. , He has a kind and approachable appearance, a fit and trim physique, and bright, piercing eyes. When he speaks, it feels as though you’re bathed in a warm spring breeze. Everyone affectionately calls him “Class Monitor Wang.”

Wang Cheng is a senior technician in the assembly workshop and the team leader of Team No. 2 in the large machine tool section. Since starting his career in 1985, he has consistently remained dedicated to his position as a fitter. Never wavered. He primarily... He is engaged in the final assembly and commissioning of grinding heads for Xianfeng CNC roll-grinding machines, roll trial runs, and user A-inspections. In his work, he excels at addressing challenges related to the grinding of hollow rolls and ultra-long, ultra-fine rolls, as well as the assembly and commissioning of ultra-high-speed grinding heads. Notably, he demonstrates strong professional expertise in resolving grinding defects that arise during roll trial runs and grinding processes.

Due to his outstanding work performance and strong professional skills, Wang Cheng has repeatedly been awarded honorary titles such as “Worker Pioneer” by Guizhou Electromechanical (Group) Co., Ltd. and “National Master Craftsman” by Guiyang Xianfeng.

Wang Cheng recalled that in May 2023, Guiyang Xianfeng received MK8420×20 (Huazhong Copper). The order encountered many challenges during the advancement of this project. The MK8420×20 (Huazhong Copper) is a CNC roll-grinding machine featuring fine grinding and long rolls. Its manufacturing technology demands high precision in every process step; however, the delivery schedule is tight and the project timeline is short. During the grinding process, even the slightest technical defect can directly affect the quality of the rolled products produced by the rolling mill. Yet, during the grinding of rolls on the MK8420×20 (Huazhong Copper) high-precision CNC roll-grinding machine for copper foil, defects such as non-circularity, surface chatter marks, and spiral patterns frequently occur, leading to unstable grinding results. Therefore, Guiyang Xianfeng convened multiple departments to jointly conduct in-depth discussions and established a dedicated task force. The company brought together key technical personnel who are deeply rooted in the production line. The Technical Center and the Final Assembly Plant were designated as the R&D center and the final assembly and commissioning center for this project, respectively. Through meticulous analysis and research, the team optimized and redesigned components including the headstock, tailstock, center rest, and auxiliary supports. They also continuously refined the grinding processes, meticulously honed and polished the surfaces, adjusted various technical parameters of the machine tool, conducted targeted experimental trials and exploratory tests, and ultimately developed a comprehensive plan for tackling critical core technologies.

Wang Cheng, who is responsible for the assembly, final assembly, and commissioning processes of this project, demonstrated a tenacious and hardworking spirit when tackling the daunting task of the MK8420×20 (Huazhong Copper) high-precision CNC roll grinder for copper foil. He calmly focused on his work, exhibiting unwavering resilience and a sense of urgency, actively studying the equipment’s structure, meticulously documenting its operating principles and potential failure points, and tracing problems back to their root causes. With great dedication and an unrelenting determination to achieve his goals, he overcame numerous obstacles, precisely controlling every grinding performance and technical parameter of the machine tool, refining indicators, and deeply pondering and analyzing every detail. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to research, repeatedly organizing team members from the fitter crew to engage in joint discussions, putting forward rationalization proposals, implementing minor improvements and innovations, and continuously optimizing the production process.

“No matter how tough the challenges may be, we’ll always overcome them. Though the process of sifting through countless sands is arduous, only after blowing away all the yellow sand can we finally uncover the gold.” After repeated grinding trials, in late December 2023, Wang Cheng and his team members—thanks to their solid technical foundation and unwavering perseverance—finally cracked this “hard nut.” Through repeated experimentation and continuous refinement of the grinding process, they successfully ground two single-end chamfered curved rolls with a diameter of Φ73 and a length of 742 mm, as well as two single-end chamfered curved rolls with a diameter of Φ42 and a length of 1,000 mm. The roll shape accuracy was maintained within the range of 0.001–0.002 mm, while the surface roughness Ra of the roll surfaces reached 0.06–0.09 µm. These rolls achieved a roundness of 0.001 mm—the “double-zero” standard—suitable for twenty-roll mills, and they smoothly passed the A inspection, completing the delivery successfully. The successful development and application of this project have added new capabilities to the grinding processes and the manufacturing of novel roll shapes for Guiyang Xianfeng CNC Roll Grinders, significantly enhancing the market competitiveness of Guiyang Xianfeng’s products in high-precision grinding and meeting the special curve requirements of twenty-roll mills.

Wang Cheng’s “nail-like spirit” is not only evident in his professional skills but also shines through in his work attitude and team spirit. Wang Cheng’s story not only highlights a craftsman’s dedication and relentless pursuit but also underscores Guiyang Xianfeng’s high regard for and vigorous cultivation of technical talent. Among Guiyang Xianfeng’s vast ranks of cadres and employees, there are many outstanding individuals like Wang Cheng—countless others who, with the spirit of “lifting mountains with sheer strength and commanding the world,” embrace the enterprising ethos of “as one ship sinks, thousands of sails pass by,” and remain down-to-earth and committed to action. Guided by the philosophy of hard work and driven by the principles of technology first, innovation, and efficiency creation, they take root and grow steadfastly, just like nails, diligently studying, persevering, and striving forward with great vigor. In their work, they place great emphasis on practical application, starting from the smallest details to ensure that all the company’s operational goals and tasks are accomplished with high quality. They pursue “high” standards of quality, maintain a “stable” momentum, and continuously strive for progress, contributing their utmost efforts to the company’s development.
